Tampa Bay Mini Maker Faire in Review: Learning by Doing & Creating!

IMG_3002Under the roof of The Concourse in Hudson, a celebration of innovation and the DIY culture is under way on a sunny Saturday in March. Mini Maker Faire exhibitors and attendees are largely indistinguishable. From the very young to the very old, participants flow through together, engaging each other and all the wonderful things their minds can conjure up. It is human creativity on full display, just waiting a chance to play.” Mitchell Brown, Tampa Mini Maker Faire: Nirvana 4 Geeks & Nerds

With these words, Mitchell Brown, a reporter for 83 Degrees, a Tampa Bay media group devoted to creating “ a new narrative for a new economy”, perfectly captured the spirit and intent of our 2013 Tampa Bay Mini Maker Faire!

“It’s impossible to leave the Mini Maker Faire uninspired,” writes Brown. “Ultimately, that’s the whole idea.”

Meet Tampa Bay Mini Maker Faire Maker Jamie Cunningham

Backyard workshopJamie Cunningham, aka  the Backyard Mad Scientist, will be showcasing his DIY inventiveness  as a Maker at our  2013 Tampa Bay Mini Maker Faire in March, where he’ll be bringing his homemade 3D printer and some of the cool things he’s made with it, like parts for his homemade CNC machine!

Jamie will also have his latest project  ”Monster in a Box” , a Halloween prop that incorporates microcontrollers, stepper motors and electronics.

And he says, “I’m also planning a “top secret” project .”

We asked Jamie to share a bit about his work and rather than repeat himself so soon after a similar interview request, he referred us to his answers for EE Web

Here’s the highlights:

Air Force Tech school is what really inspired his creative enterprise, and over the intervening years, he wound his way from “bomb loader” for the Air Force to circuit board manufacturing to software development and quality control work, finally ending up as a CAM operator, and then tinkerer extraordinaire in his Backyard Workshop Maker’s oasis.

There, he told EE Web,” Recently  after building my CNC machine in the garage, I’ve started to mess around with micro controllers (Parallax Propeller to be exact),” hence the Monster in a Box.

Jamie told EE Web his favorite hardware tool is his home built CNC manchine, learning about CNC-cwhich is also one of his favorite and most challenging builds. But he’s also very fond of his homemade foundry, which while not technically a tool, is totally awesome.    We here at TBMMF have seen his foundry and   He uses the foundry to melt aluminum and cast his own parts “usually that were cut out of foam on the CNC machine.”

Jamie also used his CNC machine recently to cut out some three dimensional foam letters for the looking at CNC made gears-cTEDxYouth@TampaBay event back in December, a process he invited local high school FIRST Tech Challenge Team Duct Tape to come watch and learn about.  The kids had a great time and were totally inspired by Jamie’s mechanical self-sufficiency.

It’s worth quoting Jamie’s remarks on why he likes the CNC machine so much: “ I like it best because it has been the most challenging and also the most rewarding, I can make just about anything I can think up (as long as I can figure out how to model it). The first machine I made, helped me make parts for the second machine – can’t beat that .”

No. You can’t.

Wonder what that “top secret project” is?

You can learn more about Jamie’s projects at his website, Backyard Workshop and see some of his work in the photo gallery there.

LI4E Makerspace Team Earns Spot in Red Bull Creation 2012 Finals!

Planning out the Red Bull Creation entry

They did it! Learning is for Everyone’s LI4E Makerspace Project team will be representing Tampa Bay,  Florida and Learning is for Everyone as a finalist in the 2012 Red Bull Creation Contest. Provided only with an arduino open source microcontroller – called a Bullduino, in Red Bull’s honor – teams from around the country put together a device of their choosing to try to impress judges with their creativity and engineering skills.

That was easy!

The LI4E Makerspace team created a Rube Goldberg-esque Red Bull Wake-Up Call alarm clock, and entered a video of their contraption into the competition on July 3. The clock, in their words, is “an over-engineered beauty .. ” Apparently Red Bull agreed!

Red Bull Creation judges selected the LI4E Makerspace team and 11 other teams from around the country as finalists, who will now compete in a 72 themed build that kicks off July 19. After a public voting period, top scoring teams get to take their creations the World Maker Faire 2012 in New York, in September. Besides getting to showcase their creations, Red Bull Creation finalists will be vying for a top prize of $10,000.

LI4E Makerspace and Team Duct Tape members, with mentor Paul Markun, of Tampa Technik.

The LI4E Makerspace Project is an effort by Learning is for Everyone (LI4E) to bring community makerspaces to Tampa Bay. The LI4E Makerspace team is an intergenerational, multi-talented crew of youth and adults, who are students, writers, artists, programmers, engineers, craftspeople and all-purpose tinkerers – a cross section of the community that would value and use a makerspace. Many of the team members are also members of LI4E’s award winning FIRST Tech Challenge team, Team Duct Tape, recently returned from competing in the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis, MO.

LI4E’s motto is “No Limits!” and the Red Bull Creation team exemplifies that no-holds-barred creativity in all they do. More information about the LI4E Makerspace team can be found here .

Congratulations, LI4E Makerspace Team!  We’ll be following closely next week, and fully expect to see one or both of their creations at Tampa Bay Mini Maker Faire 2012!

We Make, Therefore We Are!

Enjoy this fun look at Learning is for Everyone’s Makerspace Project Red Bull Creation 2012 entry! Team members hailed from LI4E’s FTC Team Duct Tape , and put their collective creativity to the test to develop the massive Rube Goldberg-like device in just three days!

Here’s the team’s description of their creation:

This over-engineered beauty is the Red Bull Wake-Up-Call alarm clock. Since anything worth doing is worth over-doing, this Bullduino-driven morning persuader is configured out a variety of repurposed items, including:

  • a 60 year old Seth Thomas travel clock
  • a Yamaha stage piano with speaker and woofer
  • an NXT brick
  • a couple of LEGO motors
  • a steel trap triggered by a falling anvil
  • and lots of duct tape!
They Make, therefore they Are – awesome!

Meet Ryder – Our Official TBMMF Videographer!

Ryder with his home-made camera rig.

We wanted to make sure we accurately captured the fun and DIY spirit of our very first Tampa Bay Mini Maker Faire, so we turned to a Young Maker whose work we already know and admire.  Ryder is the team videographer for Learning is for Everyone‘s (your TBMMF organizer) award winning FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team, Team Duct Tape.  Ryder’s nuanced eye for meaningful action, angles and editing helped Team Duct Tape earn a spot at the FIRST World Championship when they competed at the Florida FTC State Championship back in February.   We thought you’d enjoy learning a bit about Ryder, so you’ll have a heads up when you see him roving about on Saturday.

TBMMF: Please tell us a little about yourself, Ryder.

Ryder:  I am 13.  I live in Tampa Bay. I make videos for TDT , our FTC robotics team, and for my YouTube channel randomtvusa. I also like to build, and I am a Boy Scout. Also, I like to go camping.
